Not getting along
I mourn the murder of Kelsey. A young life of promise destroyed. A family shattered. But I wonder, would I feel this way if she was old, ugly or a man? Possibly not. Maybe it is the destruction of beauty that spurs good to take place.

I decided to look and see who else hade been killed in the last week. I picked KMBC's web site, and found - among the dozens of news stories about Kelsey - two instances of people dying, along with a few shootings and robberies. The only two other murders I found were summed up like this:

No Arrests Yet In Slaying At 86th, Drury
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police are still searching for the person responsible for fatally shooting a man on his front porch Friday night. Officers said they found Andre Taylor, 24, suffering from a gunshot wound at 86th Street and Drury Avenue about 8 p.m. Taylor died before he could be taken to a hospital. Anyone with information on the shooter is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

Cass County Sheriff Investigates Fatal Shooting
GARDEN CITY, Mo. -- Officials said they are investigating a fatal shooting Thursday night in Cass County. Sheriff's deputies found Leslie A. Dunkle, 44, was shot at Eighth and Ash streets in Garden City at about 7:30 p.m.
Deputies said one other person was injured. No other details were released.

There are, I think, a lot of reasons cases like this and the Ali Kemp case get so much attention. Part of it is that it's more uncommon for a murder in JoCo - that's just a statistical fact. Part of it is the activism of the family and friends - the squeaky wheel gets the grease. And part of it is the community reaction - people are more than willing to turn in their neighbor if they think (s)he might be a killler.
